Centuries of Chinese Wisdom Supporting Fertility From the Female Perspective

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used for over 2,000 years to treat fertility. Obstetrics and gynaecology have always been recognised as very important areas of medicine in the Chinese classical texts, with countless numbers of books dedicated to the subject. From a modern perspective, there are many recent scientific studies which support the effectiveness of TCM treatments for fertility.

The most important indicator of the health of a woman’s reproductive system is her menstrual cycle, reflecting the balance of her fertility hormones. Many hormones are released in a woman’s body at different times of her cycle, with the aim of timely, good quality ovulation, a good thick lining and a regular healthy period. Hormonal imbalance may result in painful and/or irregular periods, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), fibroids, low AMH, poor egg quality and miscarriage.

Whether you are hoping to fall pregnant naturally or with the assistance of IUI/IVF, it is extremely beneficial to prepare your body in advance. Chinese medicine may assist with this by strengthening your Qi (energy) and blood and calming your Shen (spirit). Ideally, the preparation should be over 2-3 menstrual cycles, however, at Vitalessence we recognise that this is not always possible and we will work with you to determine the best way Chinese medicine may assist, regardless of where you are in your journey.

At Vitalessence, each woman is assessed individually and then the TCM diagnosis and treatment plan will be discussed in depth. TCM treatment for fertility will involve acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and dietary advice. Cupping, Moxibustion and Gua Sha may also be incorporated into the treatment if indicated. Healthy sleeping habits and exercise are also important. Typically, treatment is weekly for the first 2-3 weeks and then fortnightly in line with the woman’s ovulation and menstrual cycle, however, this may vary depending on the degree of imbalance needing correction. Most importantly, your treatment plan will be individually designed to assist your journey and we will be with you throughout as an integral part of your support team, assisting you to realise your goal of being able to hold your very own tiny miracle.

From the Male Perspective

In our society, a lot of focus tends to be placed on female fertility, however, the health of the male partner and the sperm are also imperative. A healthy baby may grow inside a woman’s body, but it can only be conceived with healthy, strong, fast swimming sperm. The sperm are continually being formed within the testes, therefore, a man’s overall health plays a major role in the quality and quantity of the sperm. The sperm count measures morphology (shape), motility (speed they swim), quantity and volume of sperm.

At Vitalessence, we always take into account that it takes two to create a gorgeous, healthy baby. Each man is assessed individually and then the TCM diagnosis and treatment plan is discussed in depth. Treatment will involve acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and dietary advice. Cupping, Moxibustion and Gua Sha may also be incorporated if indicated. Healthy sleeping habits and exercise are also important. Maximising sperm health is very important regardless of whether you and your partner are aiming to achieve conception naturally or through IVF.

TCM & IVF – The Perfect Blend of Ancient Wisdom and Modern Science

There are countless numbers of women who have benefited from the scientific advancements of IVF and the increased understanding of factors affecting fertility. However, there are often side effects from the drugs or issues such as a poor uterine lining or low AMH, which do not always respond to drugs alone. TCM is often recommended as an adjunct treatment to assist with IVF.

TCM is a holistic treatment modality, working with physical, mental and energetic aspects of the body. The link between the health of the mind and the body was recognised centuries ago in China. In classical TCM texts, there are many references linking the ability of a woman to fall pregnant to the health of the Shen (spirit/emotions). IVF maybe a miraculous treatment option for infertility, however, it can be extremely stressful. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine may assist in reducing stress. Women who have undertaken this journey with us often remark about how good they feel throughout the IVF process. IVF and TCM are the perfect marriage of modern science and ancient wisdom which may assist women to achieve an age-old goal…. the joyful arrival of a much-loved, healthy baby.

Your Pregnancy Journey

Pregnancy is one of the most special journeys you will undertake as a woman.
As you nurture nature’s miracle growing within, your body will undergo more changes during the 9 months of gestation
than at any other time in your life.
Our highly experienced practitioners at Vitalessence can support you holistically throughout this wonderful journey.

TCM Support for Your Pregnancy

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used safely and effectively for thousands of years to support women throughout pregnancy, from conception to birth. Each of the three trimesters is a distinctly different experience, physically and emotionally, for each woman and each pregnancy. During the 9 months of gestation, the development of the growing foetus is intrinsically linked to the mother’s health. At Vitalessence, our TCM doctors will provide the support you need until you are holding your precious offspring in your arms.

First Trimester

The first trimester relates to the initial 13 weeks of pregnancy. It is the most critical period in your baby’s development as during this time all your baby’s skeletal and organ systems are formed. Over these three months, your baby grows from a fertilised egg to a fully formed foetus; with such rapid growth, this is the most common time for miscarriage. Your body will also undergo major hormonal changes during this trimester to support the new life growing within. This can lead to a variety of symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, bloating, constipation, abdominal pain, breast tenderness, frequent urination, fatigue, anxiety and sometimes bleeding.

TCM may be effective at stabilising your pregnancy and relieving these symptoms. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can be used safely during this time and may minimise any adverse symptoms you experience. Typically, treatment will be weekly until 8 weeks and then fortnightly until the end of the first trimester. Your body feeds your baby throughout your pregnancy; maintaining a healthy diet and exercise program to support your general health will support healthy growth of your baby and minimise the chances of gestational diabetes. Your TCM doctor will provide you with customised dietary advice in conjunction with your treatment.

Second Trimester

The second trimester is from 14 to 26 weeks. This trimester is often the easiest, with the symptoms from the first trimester usually abating. It is an exciting time as your belly starts to grow rounder and between 18-21 weeks you start to feel your baby move. As your baby grows and your hormones shift accordingly, you may experience new symptoms such as carpal tunnel, heartburn, constipation, lower back pain, varicose veins, restless legs, fluid retention and insomnia.

TCM may be of great assistance in managing any second trimester symptoms, as well as continuing to support the healthy growth and development of your gorgeous baby. Throughout these 3 months, treatment is usually on a monthly basis.

Third Trimester

This is the final 3 months of your pregnancy journey. You will be feeling your baby move and are probably excited, anxious and maybe physically uncomfortable. With baby growing bigger daily, the symptoms experienced during the second trimester may become more pronounced and you may feel increasing discomfort. As you approach the final weeks of your pregnancy, your body will start to prepare for birth with heaviness in the lower abdomen, lower back pain and Braxton-Hicks contractions.

If you find out during this trimester that your baby is breech, please contact the clinic to discuss your options.

TCM may be of assistance in managing the physical and mental symptoms that are commonly experienced in the third trimester. Treatment is usually monthly from 26 weeks until 35 weeks, then weekly through to birth of your precious bundle of joy.

Birth Preparation & Induction with TCM

Regardless of whether you are planning for a natural delivery or caesarean section, TCM may assist you to prepare for birth and breastfeeding.

If you are planning a natural birth, weekly acupuncture treatments from 35 weeks may assist in boosting your oxytocin levels and encourage baby to descend deeper into your pelvis. Between 38-41 weeks, we may assist in inducing your baby with bi-weekly acupuncture treatments. Many women who have received acupuncture at our clinic have gone into labour within 24-48 hours. If you are giving birth with a caesarean section, we recommend weekly acupuncture from 35 weeks to boost your Qi (energy) and blood in preparation for birth.

It is very exciting for us to see you realise your dream of holding your gorgeous, precious baby in your arms. From conception to birth, our TCM doctors at Vitalessence are with you. Rest assured, your goal is the same as ours…a beautiful, healthy baby!

TCM Birth Recovery

Giving birth is one of the most exciting and rewarding events in a woman’s life, however, it is also very hard work. Whether your precious child arrives through natural birth or caesarean section, your body needs time to recover. TCM may be effective at strengthening your energy (Qi) and blood flow, improving your quality of sleep, boosting milk supply and balancing emotions.

From 6 weeks after a caesarean section, acupuncture can be used to ‘bridge the scar’. This technique involves placing very small, fine acupuncture needles on either end, above and below the scar. This enables the Qi to be reconnected through the meridians severed during surgery. These channels are vital for assisting qi to flow through the reproductive organs. Therefore, this technique may assist with minimising future menstrual and fertility issues.

TCM Lactation Support

In the last few weeks leading up to the birth of your baby, your breasts will start to develop colostrum. A couple of days after birth they will fill with milk. Initially, your baby will want to feed every couple of hours day and night, which can be exhausting. In Chinese medicine, your milk is seen as an extension of your blood; if you are exhausted, your Qi and blood will also be low, which can decrease your milk supply or create stagnation in your breasts that can lead to mastitis.

TCM treatment, may be used to assist with milk supply problems or mastitis. For these issues, acupuncture needles are placed in the arms and legs. Chinese herbal medicine may also be very beneficial and strengthen the treatment effect, assisting you to have the opportunity to enjoy nature’s gift of successfully breastfeeding your precious baby.

Post-natal Depression

During your pregnancy, you spend 9 months looking forward to welcoming your beautiful baby into your family, however, the first year of mothering a child is not always as joyous as you imagine. Lack of sleep, feeding issues, working with an unsettled baby, as well as hormonal fluctuations can all result in exhaustion, anxiety and post-natal depression.

In TCM, emotional and physical health are co-dependent and intertwined. Treatment with acupuncture and Chinese herbs may boost and balance the Qi and blood of the internal organs, thus improving your emotional health; assisting you to find the joy and love of motherhood that you and your baby deserve.

Treatments for your Baby

Babies are born with an immature organ system, hence they can only digest milk for their first 3-4 months. This can result in many issues which they may experience as they adapt to life outside the womb, such as reflux, constipation, disrupted sleep, eczema, failure to thrive to name a few.

Acupuncture may be a very effective and gentle treatment for babies. Unlike with an adult, the needles are not retained, the whole treatment is over in less than a minute; often your baby will not even realise anything has occured. As they do not have the complications of emotional stress experienced by an adult, they often respond very quickly to treatment, only requiring a few sessions.
